I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d make it to this post, and without you it just wouldn’t have been possible.

  1. I’ve never heard of one server having so many experiences as you have of customers declaring they can get/do/have whatever they want simply because they’re the customer. I also am astounded at the number of customers that either grab you or yell for you. I’d be seeking employment else where just to lower my stress level.

  2. I work in a restaurant/bar in a mall that’s right by a famous country music hall tourist trap, so we get all kinds of people. I’ll admit, I haven’t embellished the actual stories so much as the times. Last night’s did happen last night, but other things happened over the course of my employment with this company.

I’m not going to post something here that didn’t happen to me, that’s just not how I do things, but sometimes the when is a little off LOL.

Lot’s of these things happen because of the amount of alcohol people can be served in our place, being that we have at minimum, 2 of our 3 bars running at any given time, and on weekends we have all three, and in private party rooms we set up temp. bars when the banquet requires. That’s a lot of alcohol for people to imbibe and do stupid shit, and Nashville is notorious for the amount of drugs running around.

A lot of times, I’ll also admit, these things are brought on by my professional yet snarky, “I’m not gonna take any shit” attitude, which guests hate because they like to be in control.

Surprisingly, Jenna, my stress level isn’t all that high because of work, it’s high due to outside sources. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I enjoy my job a lot, I love teaching the training classes, I meet tons of great people, and the dregs of my guests are what make up the majority of my blog posts. I’ve got a ton of material from the year and 3 months I’ve been there, and I’m only going to get more. Mall + alcohol + Shopping Season/Summer = Morons and Entitlement Junkies

  3. There is anyone higher up you can tell about your manager? It sounds like he is costing the restaurant a lot of money and bringing in repeat bad customers by his comps. You had them steal something and the comp reason was out right pathetic. It’s effing take out you pay for the food at a restaurant not to eat at it. Eating at the restaurant is a perk.

Yes you should charge for the hot sauce if the guy put his lips on it. Now I will admit I have drunk soy and steak sauce when I had to take some pills but only because that was the liquid I had on hand that was close.

  4. You’re right about alcohol. It can cause even the most intelligent and “civilized” person to behave in reprehensible manners. I went through my “drinking phase” right after college, from about 22-24 yrs of age and I did some incredibly stupid things.

Part of the explanation for guest behavior may lie in a post on bitter. I think the person who said something about people being treated badly by social/justice/employment systems finally feel they can lord power when they go out to eat, so they do, got it right. Add that to little training in manners, etiquette and proper rules for social, civil decorum (throw in alcohol, shake gently, don’t stir) and suddenly you have a nasty recipe for disaster. You could find these types anywhere you chose to serve in the U.S and if you catered to mainly the high end of society, you might find the same types of attitudes, only stated differently. Except instead of being neglected and treated like trash their whole lives, in every aspect of their lives, these types would likely be used to having their every whim catered to and would expect the same from you. (same disease of Entitlement Junkie, different reasons for having it, different presentation)

One thing I can’t stand, someone who is dirty (baggy pants too, but I digress). You don’t have to be rich, you don’t even have to have nice clothes, but my grandma always said there was no excuse for being dirty. She grew up DIRT poor, literally. She farmed her whole life and didn’t even have indoor plumbing until she was nearly 50 (my mother grew up without indoor plumbing and she’s only 53).

  5. congrats on your 150th post!

… I love the idea about ask ribeye and where we can post our own horror stories.. i have a couple that would definately fit in all too well.

also- ankle holders? fill me in.

  6. I don’t understand why you tolerate such abuse. This is fucking ridiculous. In my wildest dreams would I allow any one of our staff to tolerate such abuse. Maybe patrons sense that about us when they walk in the door. In 12 years I’ve only escorted 2 parties out of the house. Even being in the most touristy part of the country, we clearly don’t tolerate certain behaviors, nor do we see them that often. Maybe it is well known not to fuck with Southerners. Fucking ridiculous Ribeye!

  7. Pardon while I try and wrap my head around the sheer idiocy of the redneck who thought he didn’t have to pay for the food since he was going to take it home. I wonder if he’d try that at a McDonalds? What an idea – order everything to go and then refuse to pay for it since you aren’t going to eat it there.

As for the woman and the man and the PDA…..barf!

  8. Congrats of #150! I’d like to say you have a much higher tolerence for B.S. than I do, but it’s about the same. I think I would have had to tell the hand job couple to leave though….. but at a distence with a bull horn so in case the dude was close to popping, I would be out of harms way! EWWWWWWWWWW!

  9. Anyone who drinks out of a condiment that is to be used by anyone else, at their home or in a restaurant is just sick and knows better. Since when does food come free if you get it to go? In his line of thinking that would mean that anything you get at a drive through window would be free as well. What a scammer! Too bad your manager took his meal off the bill. That will only encourage the kid to do it again. Congrats on your 150th!

  10. i am so glad i found your blog. i love reading your tales, but at the same time, i feel so sorry for you in that you seem to have so much more pride in your work than most of your other co-workers.
